The Red Sea is Parting - Update on Lissy

Dear Friends and Family,

Lissy was succesfully extubated around 11AM today and is breathing well on her own!  Hallelujah!  Thank you so much for all of your prayers and support!  She is now off of all of her narcotics as well.  Praise God for this progress!

Unfortunately, the poor little thing looks like she feels miserable.  She is very weak, shaky and is unable to hold her head up by herself.  Since she "woke up" from the sedatives, she has refused to sleep.  She took a couple of sips of water from a mouth swab (sponge) but refused all other food and drink.  She is not really talking either.  It's possible that she might have had a stroke during or after surgery, though the nurse thinks this is very unlikely as she shows no signs of facial drooping or one-sided weakness.  I think her throat is hurting her so much that she just doesn't want to swallow anything or talk.  Please pray that Lissy sleeps well tonight, that her throat heals, that she'll try to eat and drink tomorrow and that she'll start talking and feeling better.

In the meantime, Lissy was started on IV nutrition today to give her the nutrition she needs and continues on IV fluids until she eats and drinks enough by herself.

She has had no more arrythmias this afternoon, though if they show up again, the doctors are going to conduct a 24-hour Holter monitor to further investigate.  Praise God that her heart seems to be functioning more normally now and pray that it continues to do so!

Tomorrow, the doctors hope to remove some more of Lissy's tubes and lines, which should make her more comfortable and will bring her one step closer to being discharged from the ICU.

One more side prayer request: we learned this afternoon that one of the health care workers who was in contact with Lissy on Friday came down with Influenza A and was likely contagious on Friday before (s)he was symptomatic.  Lissy is very unlikely to be at risk for contracting this flu since she was breathing air through her respirator at the time. However, as a precaution, she will be put on a 10-day course of antibiotics.  Please pray that she does not contract the flu.

Lamentations 3: 22-23 "Because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness."

Thank you, Lord!  We look forward to seeing what God's compassions will bring to Lissy and to us tomorrow!

With thankfulness,
Betsy, Tom and Lissy
